Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Tips & Tricks:     Microsoft Word:  Save All and Close All

If you have several documents open in Microsoft Word, and you want to close and save all your work, there's an easy way to do it:   just hold the Shift key down, open the File menu and you will see that the Save command has been changed to Save All.  Click it and all documents will be saved.  Note:  if any of the open documents have not been saved previously, you will be directed to the Save As dialog box.

If you just want to close everything without saving, you will see that the Close command has been changed to Close All.

Tips & Tricks:     Disabling Secure Mode Warnings in Internet Explorer

If those warnings when going from a secure site to a nonsecure site annoy you, you can turn them off.

To disable them, click Tools on the menu, then Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, and then scroll down to the Security heading. Click to uncheck Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode.  Click the OK button.

Featured Computer Term:     Metasearch Engine

A metasearch engine queries other search engines and then combines and displays the results that are received. Meta-search engines do not have their own database of Web pages and content; they send your search terms to the databases of other search engines.

By using a metasearch engine, you are, in effect, using a combination of many search engines at once to optimize your search.

Dogpile, Kartoo and Metacrawler are meta-search engines.

Is there a computer term or phrase that you'd like to see an explanation of?
Email it to info@computerkindergarten.com and we'll put the term and its
definition in an upcoming newsletter.

Today's Topic:   Keep Copies of Emails

Email:  Keep Copies of Sent Emails; Keep Copies of Received Emails

Question:  When I send an email message, I don’t have a copy of the sent email.  What do I have to do to keep a copy of the message?

Answer:
Most email programs give you the option of storing messages once you have sent them.  They will usually be kept in a sent items folder and you can choose when to delete them.

In some programs, AOL for example, the emails you send will be kept in the Sent folder without you having to do anything, and will be automatically removed after several days.

If you are using Outlook Express and your emails are not being kept in the Sent Items folder,  click Tools on the menu, then Options.  Click the Send tab, and enable the Save copy of sent messages in the Sent Items folder. This will save copies of any messages you send from now on.

For other email programs, check the program's Help feature for instructions on saving sent emails.  If this feature is not available in the program you use, you can add your email address into the CC or BCC lines of outgoing emails.  Then you will have sent a copy of the message back to yourself, which will be in the incoming mail folder.

Question:  My email program seems to remove my read emails after a few days.  How can I keep the ones that I don’t want removed?

Answer:
Save them like you would save any file.  Click File on the menu, then Save.  You can maneuver to your My Documents folder, if you’d like to save the emails in there.  Or maneuver to whatever folder you would like to use for your emails.

Websites of Interest:

Kartoo
Kartoo is a new search engine that you might want to look at.  It might take some time to get used to the format in which the search results are displayed, but it certainly offers some interesting graphics.  A useful feature:  click on a search result, and that page is opened in a new window.  When you’re finished with that window, just close it and you can return to your list of search results, without having to click over and over on the back button.
