Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature:   Open Outlook Attachments

Question:  I recently switched from America Online to Optimum Online.  I now use Outlook Express for my email.  All was going well until someone sent me an attachment.  When I tried to open it, my computer displayed this message:  OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail.  This has happened with every email that had an attachment.  What am I doing wrong?

Answer:
You are not doing anything wrong.  By default, Outlook has this security setting in place.  You can turn it off by following these steps:

Open Outlook Express. click Tools on the menu bar and then click Options.  In the Options window, click the Security tab that you see on the top.

Click to remove the check mark from Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. Click the OK button.

Now you will be able to receive and open attachments.

Remember – never open an attachment from someone you do not know!

Special Feature:  Windows XP - Create your own Screen Saver Slideshow

My granddaughter put all my digital camera pictures on my computer.  She told me that I could use them for a screen saver.  She explained how but she told me so fast that I had no idea what she was talking about.  Could you explain this better?

Answer:
Windows XP has a great feature. You can create a slideshow that will display your pictures, one by one, on your computer screen.  You can load pictures from your digital camera or scan in your old pictures, and have them displayed as a slideshow on your computer screen.

1. If you have pictures from a digital camera or scanner, save them in the My Pictures folder.
2. Right click on your desktop, then click on Properties.
3. Click on the Screen Saver tab.
4. In the screen saver list, click on My Pictures Slideshow.

Now your screen saver will show pictures from your My Pictures folder.

Today's Topic:   Remove Old Website Addresses

When I type a website address in, addresses that I have typed before appear. Some of these are not correct, or I don't want to go to that website.  Is there any way to get rid of these?  I just love getting your email. Thank you.

Answer:
Yes, there is.  In Internet Explorer, click Tools on the menu, then Internet Options.  Click the Clear History button, and then the Yes button in the small window that appears.  Click the OK button.

As you visit different websites, more addresses will accumulate; you will have to go through these steps again.

Question:   Deleting Email Quickly

When I delete an email, it stays in the Deleted Items area.  Then I have to delete them all again.  Is there an easy way to delete all the emails at once?

Answer:
In the navigation bar on the left, right click on Deleted Items.  In the resulting menu, left click on Empty Deleted Items folder.  Click the Yes button and every email will be deleted.

Question:  America Online – Recover Deleted Email

Can I recover e-mail that I deleted by mistake?  I use America Online.

Answer:
Yes, you can, but only if it has been less than 24 hours since you deleted it.  To do so, click Mail on the menu bar.  From the resulting menu, click Recently Deleted Mail.  In the Recently Deleted Mail window, click the email that you want to recover.

Click the Restore button. The e-mail will now be in with your new mail.
