Special Feature:   Organizing the My Documents Folder

The My Documents folder is a good place to keep your files, since most programs will go to that folder first when you give the Save or Open command.  After awhile, though, the folder will become so crowded with files that it will become too time consuming to find what you’re looking for.

You can organize the My Document folder by creating subfolders.  Make one for each category or type of document that you have.  For example, you could have a folder for letters, one for your finances, another for pictures, and so on. You may want to make yearly folders too. It makes keeping track of files much easier.

Here is how you create a folder:

Open the My Documents folder.

Create a new folder with an appropriate name.  To do so, click File on the menu, point to New, click Folder.  At the bottom of the list of files, you will see the words New Folder.  Type the new name of the folder and then press the Enter key.  Follow these steps to create as many folders as you want.

To move files to their new folders, simply drag the file.  Point to the file, hold down the left mouse button and drag it right on top of the new folder.  Release the button and it will go into that folder.

To save new files to a subfolder, in the program where you’ve created the file, click File on the menu and then Save.  In the Save As window that you now see, find the new folder; double click to open in.  You will see that the Save In drop-down list box now has the name of the subfolder.  Type in the filename as usual and click the Save button.

Tips & Tricks:     The Home Key

want to quickly get back to the top of a webpage? Press the Home key on your keyboard and you’ll be back at the beginning.  This works in many other programs, too.  Try it in combination with the CTRL key.

Today's Topic:   Cleaning the Mouse

Question:  My mouse is acting funny. Sometimes I have to move it a few inches before the arrow starts to move. Is it time for a new mouse?

Answer:
Before spending money on a new mouse, try cleaning it first.

Turn the mouse over. You should see a removable piece that holds the mouse ball in. It usually comes off with a little twist. Take the ball out and wipe it off with a lint-free cloth.  If it is very dirty, rinse it off under running water (the ball, NOT the mouse!!).  Make sure that the ball is completely dry before you put it back in the mouse.

Remove any dust and hair from inside the mouse. If you have one of those canned air sprayers, you can use that inside the mouse.

Look inside the mouse where the ball was.  You will see small rollers that may have grime on them.  Take a pair of tweezers and carefully remove any dust or fuzz off the rollers.

Make sure that your desk and mouse pad surface is clean and free of lint and dust.
