Special Feature:   Word Processing: Margins

Question:  How can I change the margins on a Word document?

Answer:
Click File on the menu and then click Page Setup.  You can change the left, right, top and bottom margins by clicking on the up and down arrows next to the numbers.  You can change the margins before or after you type the text.  Existing text will be formatted to the new margins.

To have larger margins, increase the numbers.  A larger left and right margin will mean shorter lines; larger top and bottom margins will give you fewer lines on each page.  If you want smaller margins, decrease the numbers.  Each line will then be longer and there will be more lines on each page.

Featured Computer Term:     Skins

Question:  I have read the term skins. What does that mean?

Answer:
Skins are graphic files that are used to change the appearance of a program. You will also hear the term themes to describe the user interface for an application.  Skins and themes are like wallpaper for a browser, media player, or other programs. For many programs, you can download them for free from the software developer, a user group, or even a fan site.

Popular media players like WinAmp, MusicMatch, RealOne, and Windows Media Player are examples of programs that have skins which can be downloaded and used for the program.

Programs have different ways to use skins. Generally, the settings would be found in the Options or Preferences menu, where you would look for Change skin or Choose theme, or something similar.  for example, in Netscape (6 and higher) open the View menu, click Apply Theme and then click Get New Themes.

Today's Topic:   Formatting Text

Question:  Can I change the size and design of the text in a letter I type?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Click Format on the menu and then click Font.  In the Font dialog box that is now displayed on your screen, the font design, style, size and color can be changed.  Underline style and color can be added.  Special effects such as Shadow or Engrave can be chosen.  When all choices are made, click the OK button.

Text formatting can be done before or after typing text.

Formatting Before Typing Text
Display the Font dialog box and make your formatting changes. Click the OK button and then type the text.  If you want to change text back to the original format, open the Font dialog box again and change to the original settings.

Formatting Existing Text
Select the text to be formatting.  Display the Font dialog box and make your formatting changes. Click the OK button.  The selected text will be formatting.

Definitions:

Font - a complete set of characters in a specific face, style, and size.  Each set includes upper- and lowercase letters, numerals, and punctuation marks.

Font Style - the slant and weight of letters, such as bold and italic.

Font Size - the height of the font, measured in points.  There are 72 points to an inch, therefore, an 18 point font is ¼ of an inch high (these measurements are approximate, based on printer capabilities)

Question:   Changing Paper Size

Question:  I have special paper, a little smaller than normal, which I would like to print invitations on.  Can I set up my computer to use that size paper?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Click File on the menu and then click Page Setup. Click the tab at the top that says Paper or Paper Size (depending on your version).  You will see settings for Width and Height.  Measure your paper with a ruler and then click the small arrows next to Width and Height to change the settings to match your paper size.

Click the OK button.
