According to the Federal Trade Commission, now more than ever, identity thieves are gaining access to computers through viruses and spyware.  Once in, they can search through your files to find personal information, allowing them to steal your identity and commit fraud and crimes in your name.

To make sure you are protected against these types of risks, do not leave sensitive data unprotected on your computer. Cookies, temporary files, history, recycle bin; you must empty and delete files that hold your personal information. Take action: update your virus protection program, use spyware and pop up blockers, and set up a firewall.

With our computer maintenance service, we will come into your business or home and setup your computer to protect you and all of your personal information.  For details of this service, visit our website at this address:

Want to try this maintenance on your own?  Order our Computer Cleanup and Safety manual for information and steps on maintaining and cleaning your computer.  Take a look at the contents of this manual and ordering information at our website:

Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to  many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on  how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on  it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your  screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address  bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on  the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open  your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet  Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then  click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the  keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature:   Change Default Font Size

Question:  I use Microsoft Word.  When I open a new document, the font size is 10.  that is too small so I always change it to 12.  Is there a way to set it so it stays that way every time I open Word? Thank you so much.  I forward your newsletter to every one I know so they can learn as much as I am.

Answer:
Yes, you can do this.  You can change the default font size.  Here is how:

Open Microsoft Word. Click Format on the menu bar and then Font. This will open the Font dialog box.

Change the font size and any thing else you might want to change.

Click the Default button.

A window will appear asking you if you want to change the default font. It will tell you that this will affect all new documents based on the NORMAL template. Click Yes.

Now, all new documents will have the font size that you changed to.

Tips & Tricks:     Delete Multiple E-mails Quickly

Question:  I have so many emails that I want to get rid of.  Is it possible to delete a number of them at once rather than one at a time?

Answer:
Yes, it is possible.  There are two shortcuts that you can use.
Hold down the Ctrl button and click on each e-mail that you want to delete. You can highlight as many e-mails as you want.

Or, click the first email that you want to delete, hold down the Shift key and then click the last email you want to delete.  This method will highlight all of the e-mails between the two selections.
After you have selected all the emails, delete them the way you usually do.

Featured Computer Term:     Defrag

When a file is stored on your hard disk, it's often split into separate fragments. Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files. At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous clusters. You can't see the fragments, and you can't stop this fragmenting from occurring, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file.

However, you can defrag your system. This is the term used for reorganizing the data on your Hard Disk into a more logical sequence, which means taking all those scattered fragments of files and piecing them back together where they belong. This helps free more hard drive space and makes the accessing of files a speedier process; your Hard Disk will work quicker and more efficiently.

In Windows, the defragmenter is located in your System Tools folder. Click on the Start button, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools. Click on Disk Defragmenter.

Today's Topic:   Outlook Express:  Back Up Your Address Book

Question:  I use Outlook Express and have the email addresses of just about everyone I know in my email address book.  My computer is getting older and I am worried if anything happens to it that I will have to collect all the addresses over again.  Can I make a copy of the address book to save onto a floppy disk?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Here is how you do it:

Click on Tools on the menu, then Address Book. The Address Book window will open.

In the Address Book window, click File from the menu, point to Export and click Other Address Book.  The Address Book Export Tool window will open.

In this window, select Text File (Comma Separated Values) as the export format. Click the Export button. The CSV Export window will open.

In this window, click the Browse button.  The Save As window will open.  Next to Save in (which will probably default to My Documents), click the small down arrow; click to select 3 1/2 Floppy A:.

Click in the Filename box and type in the filename for your address book.  Click the Save button.  The Save As window will close and you will see the CSV Export window.

Click the Next button.

Select the information you want to include in your backup by clicking on the small box to the left of the field name (ex. Name).  a small checkmark will appear in the box – this indicates that the field is selected and will be included in your saved address book file.

Click the Finish button.  Click OK. Click Close.

Hopefully your computer will last but if you have to use your backed up Address Book, here is how you do it:

Insert the floppy disk into the drive.

Select Tools, then Address Book.

Select File, then Import, then Other Address Book.

Select Text File (Comma Separated Values).

Click Import.

Click Browse.  Maneuver to the floppy drive and select the backup copy of your Outlook Express address book.

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Click OK.

Click Close.
