Special Feature:  Protect Yourself against Identity Theft

The following is from astoriafederal.com

Never give your personal information over the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless you have initiated the contact or are confident you know who you’re dealing with.

If you are not sure that a contact is legitimate, contact the company yourself, either by phone, in person, or by visiting the company’s Web site by typing in the site’s address or using a page you have previously bookmarked.

Don’t carry your Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) with you––memorize them and keep them in a safe, secure location.

Review account statements regularly to ensure that all charges are correct. If your statement is late in arriving, call your financial institution to find out why. Take advantage of Online Banking to periodically review activity online and identify suspicious activity.

Tear or shred personal financial documents such as charge receipts, credit applications, insurance forms, or any other important material.

Keep your Social Security Card in a safe place and only give out the number when absolutely necessary.

Tips & Tricks:   Windows Explorer Menu Bar in Windows Vista

Question:  I use Windows Explorer to go into My Documents.  On my new Windows Vista computer, there’s no menu bar.  Where is the menu?

Answer:
The menu is available.  In Vista, you’ll have to turn it on.

To view it temporarily, press the Alt key.  You’ll see the menu; give your command and the menu will disappear again.  This gives you maximum screen space without wasting real estate on a menu you only use occasionally.

If you prefer to have the menu displayed at all times, click Organize.  A menu will drop down.  Point to Layout.  Select the Menu Bar option.  The menu will now be permanently displayed.

Today's Topic:   Windows XP Fax

Question:  My grandson says I can use my computer to receive faxes.  How can I do this?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  As long as your computer has a modem.  You can check if it does or not; look for a phone jack in the back of the tower or, if you’re using a laptop, on the back or one of the sides.

The fax isn't automatically installed.  You will have to set it up.  To do so, click the Start button and Open Control Panel.  Open Add/Remove Programs.

Click Add/Remove Windows Components. Select the Fax Services check box and then click Next. The Windows Component Wizard will walk you through the rest of the steps.

After the fax is installed, you will have to configure it. To do so, click the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, point to Fax and then click Fax Console.

You will now see the Fax Console window.  Click Tools on the menu and then click Configure Fax.  This will open the Fax Configuration Wizard.  Click the Next button.

On the Sender Information page, input your name and any other information you would like to include.

On the Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes page, your modem will be selected, unless you have more than one. If you do, select the one you want to use. Select the send and receive options that you want.

On the Transmitting Subscriber Identification (TSID) and Called Subscriber Identification (CSID) pages, enter your business name, if applicable, and fax number.

On the Routing Options page, specify how incoming faxes will be handled. All faxes will be saved in the Fax Console, but you can also print a copy save a copy in another folder.

Sending Faxes

Open the document you would like to fax.  Click File on the menu and then Print.

In the Print window, click the down arrow to the right of your printer name.  Click Fax to open the Send Fax Wizard.

The Send Fax Wizard will guide you through the fax process, asking for recipient information such as name, fax number and when to send the fax.

Question:   Outlook Express Disk Space Message

Question:  I use Outlook Express.  Recently, when I close the program, a window opens that says "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact your messages.  What does this mean?

Answer:
When you delete emails from Outlook Express, they’re moved from the Inbox to the Deleted Items folder.  They must then be deleted a second time.  The emails still remain on your computer, in a folder on the hard drive, until they are replaced by something else.

When you see the window offering to compact your message, allow Outlook Express to do so.  It will remove all those old emails, giving extra storage space
