Today's Featured Computer Term: search engine
A search engine is a software program that searches computer files for specific "key words" or terms that you use to find the information you want.
When most people think of search engines, they think of sites on the Internet that let you search for words on web pages worldwide. But a search engine can also be a part of an operating system or software program, like email. So for example, you can look for words in word processing documents that you may have on your hard drive, or search for emails from a certain person.
Both types of search engines work the same in most cases - you type the words that you are looking for into a "search field," and the program returns a list of files where the requested keywords are found.

Today's Topic: How Internet Search Engines Work
Typically Internet search engines operate by sending out a "spider," or an application that "crawls" or systematically reads all of the Web pages on the Internet.
This spider program gathers copies of the documents and stores them on its own collection of web servers. Then another program called an "indexer" reads the documents and creates an index based on the Web pages so the search engine can retrieve searches quickly.
In addition to noting the frequency of the key words, each search engine uses a unique formula to rank the significance of the results of each "query" or search.
Some rank results based on how many other people have clicked on the page from a search before, or how many other pages on the Internet are linked to it.
And some rank pages from certain partners the search engine company may have higher than other sites on the Internet, so be aware what search engine you choose will affect your results.
Yahoo, Dogpile, Excite, AltaVista, and Lycos are some of the most popular Internet search engines. |
